You thought it couldn’t get any better than this, huh?
You know, that lil bundle of joy you’re holding in your arms.
You love the way he/she coos at you, you love the scent that emits from under his/her neck.
You wish those moments could last forever.
Lil Bundle O’Joy will grow and one of his/her stops on the road to growing will be tweendom.
Contrary to popular belief, it’s cool being the mom of a tween. No, really. Stop laughing and no, I am not drinking as I am typing this. First, let me give you a bit of background information about tweens.
Tweens are a fickle group. And rightfully so, since they are caught in the middle, fleeing baby/toddlerhood, running from being just a “little kid” and straight ahead into the teenage years.
Being a tween means that you are within the ages of 9 and 12. It means that there are a gazillion hormones raging within a your body, fighting, bumping against each other, trying to figure out which way to go in order to be comfortable. Because of those hormones, tweens can sometimes get a bad reputation. Some call tweens bossy, mean, irritable, demanding and moody.
Some say that the term “tween” equals bad behavior, that tweens shouldn’t have their own “label”.
I believe, that for all that their bodies go through during this time, tweens deserve their own identity. Ultimately, the parents have the ability to shape what their child morphs into.
As a mom of a tween girl, I have discovered some cool/not cool things about being the mom of a tween. Grant it, we are at the onset of tweendom and I will probably start to agree with others about tweens being horrid, little creatures…
What’s so cool about being the mom of a tween? Why love them?
They can feed themselves
Cool because mom can actually eat her food while it’s hot and with the rest of the family.
Not cool because not only do they use that mouth to eat and chew the food with but they can also offer their opinion on what should be for dinner.
Cool because mom no longer has to worry about the exhausting discipline of potty training
Not cool because they have found other uses for the bathroom, which includes long showers and lots of mirror primping.
Cool because the public meltdowns no longer exist.
Not cool because now the meltdowns exist within the confines of your home, for your eyes only.
Sleeping through the night
Cool because mom can finally get some rest.
Not cool because either they will start to sleep really late or if they are like Tween Girl, rise extremely early.
Cool because, as a tween, they now get any song or music references made by mom and dad and can join in on the fun conversations.
Not cool because, at least with girls, the talking is non stop. SHUT UP ALREADY!
Ok, so, maybe you’re not sold on this idea of enjoying raising a tween as opposed to raising a baby or toddler. As parents, we have the opportunity to shape our children as they grow through each stage. Will we always get it right? Nope. But that doesn’t stop us from loving them all the same.
Enjoy whichever stage you are currently in with your children. For those cool moments, be present. For the not so cool moments, just know that “this too shall pass”.
For the stage you’re currently in, how do you make the moments count?
